How to get an accurate printed ruler

  1. Print at 100% / Actual size. "Fit to page" shrinks everything by a few percent.
  2. Check the scale with any credit card, debit card or driver's license: they are all 85.6 × 54 mm.
  3. Print on card stock for a sturdier ruler, cut along the dashed line and tape the two parts of a long ruler together at the matching number.

Reading the marks

  • Inches: the longest lines are whole inches, then halves, quarters, eighths and the shortest are sixteenths.
  • Centimeters: long lines are centimeters, medium lines are 5 mm and short lines are millimeters.
