A label sheet is defined by three things: the size of each label, how many there are across and down, and where they sit on the page. Avery sells most layouts under several product numbers (for laser printers, inkjet printers, clear or colored labels), so the number on your pack may not be the famous one. This chart lists the common layouts and the numbers that share them, taken from Avery's own compatibility lists.

Sizes are height × width, the way label packs list them. US sheets are 8½ × 11 in Letter paper; L-numbers are for A4 paper (210 × 297 mm) sold in the UK and Europe, and the J-number with the same digits is the inkjet version. Which label for which job
- Address labels for cards and letters: 5160 (1 × 2⅝ in, 30 per sheet) fits a four-line address. For long lines use 5161 (1 × 4 in), and for five or six lines 5162 (1⅓ × 4 in).
- Return address labels: 5167 (½ × 1¾ in, 80 per sheet) for small neat labels, or 5195 (⅔ × 1¾ in, 60 per sheet) for larger text and a small picture.
- Shipping labels for boxes: 5163 (2 × 4 in, 10 per sheet), 5164 (3⅓ × 4 in, 6 per sheet), 5168 (3½ × 5 in, 4 per sheet) or the half-sheet 5126.
- Full-sheet labels (5165): one 8½ × 11 in label to cut into any shape.
How to identify a sheet without a number
- Count the labels across and down.
- Measure one label's width and height with a ruler, in inches or millimeters.
- Find the row in the chart with the same count and size. Labels from other brands often copy Avery layouts and say so on the pack ("same size as 5160").
- If nothing matches, choose Custom size in the label maker and enter the measurements: label size, count, top and left margins, and the distance from one label to the next.
Laser, inkjet or both
The same layout comes in versions for different printers. Labels made for inkjet printers have a coating that holds the ink; in a laser printer some of them can curl or melt. Labels made for laser printers can smudge in an inkjet. The layout is the same, so the template is the same: just buy the version the pack says suits your printer.
Letter and A4 are not interchangeable
A4 is 210 × 297 mm, a little narrower and taller than US Letter (216 × 279 mm). An A4 label sheet printed with a Letter template, or the other way round, drifts further off with every row. Choose the template for the paper your labels are on, and make sure the printer's paper size matches.
