What isometric paper is
Isometric paper is a grid of equilateral triangles: vertical lines plus lines at 30° to the horizontal in both directions. It matches isometric projection, a way of drawing 3D objects where the three axes are 120° apart and lengths along each axis keep the same scale. Cubes, buildings and machine parts can be drawn by following the lines, with no vanishing points to work out.
Uses
- Technical and engineering sketches of parts and assemblies.
- Video game, tabletop and Minecraft-style level design.
- Geometry lessons on 3D shapes, nets and volume with cubes.
- Isometric illustration and hand lettering.
Dots or lines? Isometric dot paper gives the same grid with less clutter, so finished drawings look cleaner. For drawings with vanishing points, use the perspective grid.
Printing tips
- Print at 100% (Actual size), not Fit to page, so squares and line spacing keep their exact size.
- Light lines (gray or light blue) are easy to write over and fade into the background of a scan or photo; use darker lines for drawing practice or when the paper will be photocopied.
- Need a stack? Set the number of pages and print the PDF once, or print one page and photocopy it.
- Thicker paper (24 to 32 lb or 90 to 120 gsm) takes ink pens and markers without bleeding through.
